Teachers, have you ever heard a song early in the morning
and then had it stuck in your head ALL DAY? What about a commercial jingle? Can
you sing all the lyrics to songs that were popular when you were a teenager? Most
people answer “yes” to all of those questions. It is easy to see that music has
a powerful and long-lasting effect on the human brain. <o:p></o:p></div>

Math and music naturally go together. They are both built on
patterns. Math chants and songs make learning math seem easy and effortless.
The tunes will satisfy your auditory learners, while including graphics or
videos will help your visual learners. You can make your kinesthetic learners ecstatic
by adding in movement or dance.<o:p></o:p></div>

to use old children’s song tunes and new pop tunes for math songs. Even if you
don’t do the whole song, one verse or a chorus will engage students and help
with learning. Don’t worry if you are not a good singer (I’m terrible). The
kids won’t care. You can sing without using any music at all, but if you’re
really ambitious you can find instrumental versions of almost any song in the
history of the universe for free on YouTube.

What about multiplication facts? Every 3rd grade teacher
knows he or she will have at least a handful of students who cannot seem to
memorize their times tables. Every 4th and 5th grade teacher gives that special
“math talk” at least once each school year. You know the one. It’s where you
explain that performing math operations such as multi-digit multiplication and
long division would be SO much easier if basic math facts could be recalled
with automaticity.<o:p></o:p></div>

a free resource that outlines a very successful method for achieving
multiplication success in 3rd grade. It involves starting with what most 3rd
graders already know (counting by 2, 5, and 10), then showing them how skip
counting and repeated addition is actually multiplication in disguise. Next teach
them the commutative property for multiplication, followed by teaching the
times table rules for 0 and 1. Once this is done, there are only 21 facts left
to learn! Memorizing 21 multiplication facts is a goal that even math-phobic
students believe they can reach. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I’ve had great success with students learning “the 21 hard

I’ve created a short rhyme for each of the 21 hardest multiplication facts with
a cartoon-like zombie-themed illustration. Kids LOVE to watch and sing along

Currently, Rosie's has twelve decks in our TpT store, but many more will be added in the very near future. It's so easy to rotate them out throughout the year. I've used them at learning stations, on the white board in whole group, even in small group or individually in remedial lessons. Try playing a competitive game in teams on the interactive white board for test review. Kids love it!<br />
<br />
Just to let you know, I'm super psyched to learn that I'll receive a free year's subscription to Boom! Learning just for writing this blog post. How cool is that? To see playable previews, <a href="http://bit.ly/RosieBoomCards" target="_blank">click here</a>, choose any deck, and click on the preview. Enjoy!<br />

The best way to keep them motivated and learning is to choose activities that are meaningful and related to your curriculum, yet are easy for teachers to plan and set up. Over the next few days, I'll present some ideas that are easy for you, the teacher, but fun and engaging for the kids.<br />

It's a colorful PowerPoint presentation that tells the history behind Cinco de May, why it's celebrated in the United States, and why courage and patriotism are so important.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I recently learned about a free (I love free!) site that is perfect for test prep or review any time of the year. You can find it at Kahoot.it. In three easy steps, you can have the most engaging test prep ever.<br />
<br />
1. Create a free account at Kahoot.it.<br />
2. Create a quiz.<br />
3. Kids take the quiz on their laptops, iPads, Ipods, Iphones - any personal device.<br />
<br />
Kahoot is great for questions that can be answered with an objective response, such as homophones, spelling, punctuation, equivalent fractions, or any underlying skill that is the foundation for kids being able to think critically.<br />
<br />
When you create your account, be sure to write down your username and password so you can easily access your account later, during class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzv-PODjecgiRmyCIJMeg0mM8AaidCCpHfx6EUaaSuGtNuFHM3dTdyY7l4W3H49hPgj6ShJisGLqbXk9lPdSp04PBHY_bic9Jzul9ykbhXvSI9WI2Z0sunOP3MuZdnm5jw0YDHzDzzVI/s1600/IMG_1547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzv-PODjecgiRmyCIJMeg0mM8AaidCCpHfx6EUaaSuGtNuFHM3dTdyY7l4W3H49hPgj6ShJisGLqbXk9lPdSp04PBHY_bic9Jzul9ykbhXvSI9WI2Z0sunOP3MuZdnm5jw0YDHzDzzVI/s320/IMG_1547.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
There are 4 types of kahoots, but the quiz works best for test prep.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQhfqn11bxFJS-UniSqkhK62kvw-ClEC88w_FDF99YSf2UeeaBtwBsI0mqiKcUcPySs65-BDY6Irt52IY1OAZyHbVF1nv_Po16OnEtw3cBON2kbv2_MqInP46Kpeh-uOuOGGlEsSQtEEU/s1600/IMG_1551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQhfqn11bxFJS-UniSqkhK62kvw-ClEC88w_FDF99YSf2UeeaBtwBsI0mqiKcUcPySs65-BDY6Irt52IY1OAZyHbVF1nv_Po16OnEtw3cBON2kbv2_MqInP46Kpeh-uOuOGGlEsSQtEEU/s320/IMG_1551.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
After you create the kahoot, you will write the quiz questions and answer choices. You may also drag an image to upload, but this is optional.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV068Vnf4icx8l9u35JyCZJGuzpw0gSQlb5Dx2WgrIDJ1PH0WLT1Hj8sUFGmUmCa6_Gl1q0Gt8hRuFEwsiLuRFsdBIIIuWoSTisp0sZ4bu8U0-01zWN7i3Jxyw5FdkvzLIkvn8mwKxSEw/s1600/IMG_1555.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV068Vnf4icx8l9u35JyCZJGuzpw0gSQlb5Dx2WgrIDJ1PH0WLT1Hj8sUFGmUmCa6_Gl1q0Gt8hRuFEwsiLuRFsdBIIIuWoSTisp0sZ4bu8U0-01zWN7i3Jxyw5FdkvzLIkvn8mwKxSEw/s320/IMG_1555.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
You may save your quiz either publicly or privately. Write down the kahoot number so you can easily find the quiz later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs3FJY6D7HmbqT-OK_nV7Pp7INm1r_tKb3ry-ZfkxQDqTYeZu3BF1K2LbBVj3SDD7331ZbXZwXo8QMbnz62Z332LUnzT-NxP6h1b6n2VG26Ppv9Tu4daMIAS_oPfFqA_r28Qh6_4LOjO4/s1600/IMG_1546.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs3FJY6D7HmbqT-OK_nV7Pp7INm1r_tKb3ry-ZfkxQDqTYeZu3BF1K2LbBVj3SDD7331ZbXZwXo8QMbnz62Z332LUnzT-NxP6h1b6n2VG26Ppv9Tu4daMIAS_oPfFqA_r28Qh6_4LOjO4/s320/IMG_1546.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
In class, log in to kahoot. Here, you'll be glad you wrote down your username and password! Navigate to your kahoot number and project it for the whole class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

here is what the students' devices will look like. This kahoot used only two answer choices for each question, but you can have as many as four answer choices. If the correct answer is a red triangle, the kids press the red triangle to register their answer choice.<br />

I was completely impressed with this super cool way to review material. It's free, takes very little prep time, and the kids were completely energized due to the digital application and the competition. It's one of the easiest, most effective test prep applications I've seen. Many thanks to Mrs. Gamboa, in whose classroom I was a guest when she introduced Kahoot. I'd love to know if you give it a try!<br />

As a writing teacher, have you been lugging home stacks of
essays and narratives to grade during the weekend? Do you find that you are
usually the last teacher to leave the campus at night because of grading
demands? When report card deadlines approach, do you feel a sense of panic
because you don’t have substantive grades recorded that show your students’
true writing progress?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Panic no more, my teacher friends! Here’s an easy way to
record your students’ progress in writing. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Writing workshop follows a sequence.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "symbol"; text-indent: -0.25in;">· </span><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">The teacher gives a mini-lesson.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "symbol"; text-indent: -0.25in;">·<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">The students write while the teacher moves
around the room checking on students’ progress and having mini-conferences.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "symbol"; text-indent: -0.25in;">· </span><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">The students share, either in whole group or
with partners.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The key to effective grading is during the middle part of
the sequence. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Before class begins, print a blank roster of your class. (I keep several printed ahead in a file
folder in my desk.) While students are writing and you are quietly checking in
with students to encourage and support, carry the roster on a clipboard as you
move around the room. Jot down the grade and any notes you need to remember
about particular students. By the end of the writing workshop, you have a daily
writing grade that is meaningful, and you didn’t have to spend an hour after
school to accomplish it!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE5Sh-AmRYPU0fSfIF6PzD2R5VH6mh6dWaC92JXAfGQJIgifo9Qda7Tr4Awmri4YFZDRUqdMsEL1C1uxtG0pCV1OC1FgnCXsaeb26i4KqFi3yg8P5CEXSlYXmTe9f0vCfZDVn9P2SKB6g/s1600/Roster+2+small+for+Felicity.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE5Sh-AmRYPU0fSfIF6PzD2R5VH6mh6dWaC92JXAfGQJIgifo9Qda7Tr4Awmri4YFZDRUqdMsEL1C1uxtG0pCV1OC1FgnCXsaeb26i4KqFi3yg8P5CEXSlYXmTe9f0vCfZDVn9P2SKB6g/s400/Roster+2+small+for+Felicity.png" width="400" /></a></div>
A grade in writing class does not always have to be over an
entire composition. For example, if the mini lesson was about introductions,
simply grade the introduction. If it was over transitions, then grade only the
student’s use of transitions that day.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In my writing class, numerical grades are always the same.
This is the system I use.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
100 –
Superior. I rarely score 100 for daily writing, but sometimes you have that creative,
risk-taking student who goes above and beyond and writes something magnificent.
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
95 – Excellent.
The student applied the new knowledge to
his writing. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
85 – A very
good job. The student applied the new
knowledge to his writing, but was careless about conventions or other
previously learned skills.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
75 – An
adequate job. The student attempted to perform the new skill, but was a bit
awkward in its application.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
70 –
Poor. The student did not apply the knowledge well, but is listening well and
attempting to write. This student writes on a lower level than most of your
other students and needs a lot of individual support. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
60 –
Failing. This student did not try. (I rarely assign this grade.)<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, my teacher friends, make your grading life easier.
Simply record the grades for the evaluations you are probably already making
during class.<o:p></o:p></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 16pt; text-indent: -0.38in;">Kids need to practice the skills you have taught them in whole group and small group. Learning stations are the perfect way for them to practice while you are delivering that important small group instruction. In the upper elementary grades, learning stations should be easy to implement, easy to manage and, most of all, effective. Following are seven easy steps to implement learning stations in only two weeks.</span></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<h2>
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-indent: -0.38in;"><b>1. One-A-Day</b></span></h2>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;">Introduce one learning station each day. Choose activities that your students are familiar with from the previous year. After the whole group introduction, give students an opportunity to practice the activity. Allow them to work with partners or table groups. Repeat for five days, with five different activities.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h2>
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-indent: -0.38in;"><b>2. High-Five!</b></span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;">You've done it! By the end of the first week, you will have five stations that students can rotate through.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<h2>
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-indent: -0.38in;"><b>3. Introduce Expectations</b></span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;">When the second week begins, you can introduce your classroom expectations for rotating through stations. Prior to class, group students into small groups. From 3 to 5 students work well in a group.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<h2>
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-indent: -0.38in;"><b>4. Just Practice Movement</b></span></h2>
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.38in;"><span style="text-indent: -0.38in;">Decide on a signal for students to know when it's time to rotate. Practice several times moving quietly from their desks to their groups, and rotating to the next group at your signal.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.38in;"><span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<h2>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>5. Now Practice Working</b></span></span></h2>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;">The following day, students are ready to actually work in their stations. You may want to practice the rotation exercise before you begin, to reinforce expectations.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<h2>
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-indent: -0.38in;">6. Don't Rush It!</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;">Monitor students during their first week of working in stations, rather than meeting with small groups. The time invested will be well worth it, so students to learn to stay focused and work with their partners.</span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 12pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<h2>
<span style="text-indent: 0in;"><span style="color: magenta; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>7. Add Small Group Instruction</b></span></span></h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After two weeks, your students will be working independently in learning stations, and you can begin the important task of small group instruction. Introduce One additional learning station each week, until you have a balance of reading, writing and word work learning stations.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="text-indent: -0.38in;"><br /></span></div>

It's been completely overhauled to feature Super Cute Super Heroes.<br />

I've used it two ways: Some years I give them a page at a time, and then they compile it when all the pages are finished. Other years, I've stapled the whole thing as I Xerox it, and the kids work on the pages in the order they want to. Both ways work, depending on your preference and classroom needs.<br />
<br />
All pages are in black and white to accommodate printing in quantities. There are individual pages included for each grade level.<br />

Another cool thing about this is that it includes language arts and math activities, but the activities are not what you would use in your regular classroom. The language arts activities are mostly about summer.<br />
<br />
Try using the ABC book activity as a research product. Students research a topic and write an ABC book to show their findings.<br />

Do you have reluctant readers? Are you always trying to find engaging materials that kids will truly love reading? If you teach elementary students, this might be a good choice as you swing into crunch time with reading test prep. Topics such as dinosaur poop, volcanoes, and extreme insects are sure to lure those reluctant readers. Each topic is either science or social studies to facilitate cross-curricular instruction These are short nonfiction passages with four questions each. Questions require students to infer and otherwise think deeply about their text to answer questions. Available in two reading levels. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Test-Prep-Reading-2409247" target="_blank">Click here for grades 4-6.</a> <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Test-Prep-Reading-2409899" target="_blank">Click here for grades 2-3.</a></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">Are
your students busy practicing for state tests? Want to keep them motivated?
Here’s a solution.</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
</div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">1. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">Photocopy stacks of awards on
colored paper. Keep them handy, wherever you’re working with kids—at your desk,
at your guided instruction table, etc. Every time kids score 100% on their
practice, give them an award. </span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">2. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">Let kids know about the awards before
they start their practice. They will work hard to earn the certificate! </span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">3. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">Keep giving the certificates out. Kids
like to collect these. Sometimes they get little competitions going to see who
can earn the most.</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">4. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">Differentiate when necessary. For
example, you can give an award for improvement. </span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">5. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">Assign an early finisher as a helper.
He/she can fill in student names while you’re remediating with other kids.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">6. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">This is a very simple way to communicate
with parents. They are so proud when their child comes home with an award!</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 18pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 0pt; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 16pt;">You may download a free set of awards by <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Test-Prep-Awards-2411592" target="_blank">clicking here</a>. Enjoy!</span></div>

Teaching poetry isn't as difficult as some think. It's easy to incorporate into a week's reading activities because the texts are short. Some people make the mistake of teaching the structural elements of poetry first--identifying a stanza, rhyming patterns, types of poetry. Instead, I like to begin with the comprehension aspect of poetry. What is the speaker doing? What does the reader visualize during reading? What is the poet saying about the subject? How does he feel about the subject? Here are some easy steps to make teaching poetry easy.<br />
<h3>
1. Introduce the Poem</h3>
Give a brief introduction to tell students what the poem is about. Is it traditional (old)? Is it humorous? Is it serious? Is it about a dog, or a trip to the beach?<br />
<h3>
2. Read Aloud</h3>
Project the poem on a screen and read the poem aloud to the students while they follow along silently. Be theatrical; it makes the poem more meaningful. Read it a second time, so they can enjoy it again and pick up meaning they missed the first time.<br />
<h3>
3. Read Together</h3>
Read the poem together. Keep the pace a bit slow so kids can keep up and further comprehend the poem's message.<br />
<br />
<h3>
4. Look at Interesting Lines</h3>
Look at interesting words, lines, stanzas. Discuss sensory images and what the reader visualizes.<br />
<br />
<h3>
5. Discuss What the Speaker Is Doing</h3>
Discuss what the speaker of the poem is doing. Is he active in the poem, or is he observing something and commenting on it. What is the speaker feeling? Is he happy, sad, excited? Does the poem tell a story or express feelings?<br />
<br />
<h3>
6. Identify Poetic Elements</h3>
Now that the kids are familiar with the poem is the time to attach labels to the various elements. Help them to understand the difference between a sentence in prose and a line in poetry. Count the stanzas. Believe it or not, some kids can be confused about what a stanza is. Identify the rhyme scheme. Identify any couplets. Is there repetition? Are there other forms of figurative language? Is it lyric poetry or free verse?<br />
<br />
I know we teachers all have to get grades for our report cards. One way to handle this is to discuss a poem in this manner before giving a comprehension quiz on a poem. I have developed several poems with open-ended questions and objective questions over the same poem. After kids are a familiar with poetry, they can work with a partner to complete the open-ended questions. Then, discuss in whole group. Finally, use the objective quiz to assess understanding and get that important grade for the grade book. If you would like sets of these poems with both types of questioning, check out my monthly Close Reading packets. There are four different poems included in each Close Reading packet. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/January-Close-Reading-2273500" target="_blank">You can grab the January packet here.</a><br />

It's particularly difficult for them to edit for specific objectives in their writing. Try having students rotate among stations around the room. At each station, they revise or edit with a specific objective in mind, such as spelling or reviewing for complete sentences. <br />

</div>
In fourth and fifth grades, students learn to generate functions and understand the relationships between two sets of numbers. Students need to be able to generate sets of ordered pairs of numbers to lay the foundation for graphing equations in later grades.<br />
<br />
Following is an easy way to help students immediately understand the concept. Before class, prepare an input/output table for each group of students. Small groups of students are preferable so each student fully participates. Three in each group is perfect. Nine-inch by eighteen-inch size paper works well because it is large enough for sticky notes the students will use.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtoWQgiJlEWd0212EgZBfMvto6UTBZ6Wdti5wwwg7kiv5RWY1VtoUq046irvj8dRH-xXY8cSrPw2uhluHtT34WMU_WW4oruDKHrDstF00ljhFSdumcsmoK5blDTzd6X2DOYQYeyKQ4-JI/s1600/image3067aa.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtoWQgiJlEWd0212EgZBfMvto6UTBZ6Wdti5wwwg7kiv5RWY1VtoUq046irvj8dRH-xXY8cSrPw2uhluHtT34WMU_WW4oruDKHrDstF00ljhFSdumcsmoK5blDTzd6X2DOYQYeyKQ4-JI/s400/image3067aa.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Prepare charts in advance. A marker on large construction paper works well.<br />
<span style="font-size: small; text-align: start;"></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In class, first model creating a simple function in whole group so the students know what is expected. Then, distribute the blank charts, together with a generous supply of sticky notes. (I had to trim mine down a bit with the scissors to make them fit neatly in the spaces.) By using sticky notes, the project becomes more tactile. Also, groups can use the charts more than once by removing the first set of stickies before they create a second function. Invite students to work together to create their own functions. Instruct students to choose a different operation for their second function.<br />
<br />

<br />

</tbody></table>
<div>
One advantage of having students create their own functions is that they usually challenge themselves greater than the teacher might. For example, the student whose journal is shown above chose <i>multiply by 15</i> as his rule. In the picture below, groups chose <i>multiply by 12</i> and <i>subtract 12</i> - both more challenging than I might have chosen in a teacher-directed activity.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Students are proud to display their functions!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The quick check assessment after this lesson showed nearly 100% mastery. The students felt successful, and I know they have a good initial understanding of functions.<br />
<br />
Many blessings,</div>

working on a perfectly printed one helps to build number sense. Divide the

Here’s a math station that I provide in my classroom for at
least the first quarter of the year. A number line helps students build number
sense and helps students with the ordering of numbers. In fourth grade, I
introduce this number line during a whole group lesson on ordering decimals. On
butcher paper, the students and I build the number line together as I ask
questions to guide them. Then, on different colored sticky notes, I write
some decimals. I distribute the sticky notes to a group of students.
They place the decimals in order on the number line. The class records the
order of the decimals in their math journals from greatest to least or least to
greatest. Each group takes a turn. </div>

Here's a new freebie that will help, that I'm offering as a thank you to my followers. It's a routine that you can use in your class every day--Sentence of the Day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsCsIYbb8WVDLomHeMKpJ0LCaS_9hV6IrOdF78-Ol4mXn3LsLA0C4dqScpnKcAC8IMXHekVALpvZ4Evl1LJ-tZpjRs12k9P1LT8cqVypIbrhgY9vKytBoCmH0JDvqh7JM6rU-gTxxQX_0/s1600/Sentence+of+the+Day+Rosie%2527s+Resources.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsCsIYbb8WVDLomHeMKpJ0LCaS_9hV6IrOdF78-Ol4mXn3LsLA0C4dqScpnKcAC8IMXHekVALpvZ4Evl1LJ-tZpjRs12k9P1LT8cqVypIbrhgY9vKytBoCmH0JDvqh7JM6rU-gTxxQX_0/s320/Sentence+of+the+Day+Rosie%2527s+Resources.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Sentence of the Day is completely prep-free. You don't even have to photocopy anything. Just project it on the screen and have the kids write and edit the sentence in a section of their journals or on a piece of paper. Each week on Sunday, I'll post the five daily sentences on Pinterest, each in a separate pin for your ease in projecting. Follow my Pinterest boards so you can easily find the images. I'll also put a link here on my blog that links to the images on Pinterest. If you want a complete resource that covers every language arts objective in both Common Core and the Texas TEKS, you can check out my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Rosies-Resources/Category/-Daily-Language-Review-" target="_blank">Daily Language Reviews for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades that are used in over a thousand classrooms</a>. <br />
<br />
If a sentence a day is all you need, follow this blog and <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/rosiesresources/" target="_blank">click here</a> to find the sentences as they are posted throughout the year. Look for the hot pink Sentence of the Day Pinterest board. The answer key is right there in the comment section just below the image on Pinterest. It's an excellent daily warm-up, and it's free! Have a great school year! <br />

I had over 100 boards, some of which I didn't use much and were repetitive. I've pared it down to about 50 boards (even though I need to add back a few more). I changed the names on some of the boards to make it more clear about the content on the board. Yes, I know some links will be lost, but I thought it was important enough to go ahead. My goal is to be a better pinner. I'll do that by:<br />
<br />
1. Repinning more informative links.<br />
<br />
2. Making my boards more relevant to teachers of upper elementary grades.<br />
<br />
3. Offer more, such as a Daily Sentence for editing. (That's what will be on my new board "Sentences.")<br />
<br />
I wish I would have taken a screen short before the clean-up, but hind-sight.... Anyway, here's the new look. All the boards I created now sport a spiffy new cover with a clear title. The boards are arranged alphabetically. Does anyone arrange yours differently, eg, by relevance?? If so, I'd love to hear from you, because I wasn't sure which to do.<br />
<br />
You can only see a few of the boards in the screen shot. I'd love it if you'd click on over to <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/rosiesresources/" target="_blank">Rosie's Resources on Pinterest</a> and let me know what you think. I'm itchin' to get some feedback! Thanks for looking!<br />

Even at fourth and fifth grade, students struggle to identify the Big Deal, or the main idea, of a paragraph. Here are a few tips that might help.<br />
<br />
1. Use a gradual release of responsibility. During whole group instruction, read a text together. Our district covers fiction first, so that's the genre I use at the beginning of the year. Stop after a paragraph and model how to identify the details in the paragraph. Combining the details leads the reader to the main idea. As you read the story together, stop after another paragraph and identify the main idea together.<br />
<br />
2. Then allow students to work in partners to identify the main idea in later paragraphs. Allow students to practice during small group instruction with short texts or portions of longer texts. Students also practice in learning stations with texts on their independent level. Finally students will be able to identify the main idea independently.<br />
<br />
3. Use open-ended questioning at the beginning of year so students don't get dependent on finding the answer among the objective-type answers provided. Later, as testing approaches, you can switch them to the objective question and answer format.<br />
<br />

Whenever I hear a fourth grader say how much they enjoyed a
lesson, they often add, “You’re funny, Mrs. Kasper," even though I'm not a natural jokester. With today’s packed curriculum and preparation of students for
testing, it’s important to keep in mind that kids remember more if they’ve found
some humor in the lesson. But what if you’re more reserved? What if you tend to
have a more serious personality? Here are five ways to add some humor to your
classroom, even if you have a more somber personality.<o:p></o:p></div>

That's why we have learning stations in our classrooms, right? Well, that, and to keep them busy with meaningful work while we work with students in small groups.<br />
<br />
You can extend the same high level of thinking into your learning stations that you elicited during your whole-group instruction. Let's say I just taught my students the elements of fiction. I put either the same text or a different text that is on the level of students in the learning station. I also place the same questions I use in my lessons in the learning station. So, if I want students to practice recognizing the importance of the setting to the overall message of the story, I put the setting cards in the learning station. Students take their reading journals to the learning station and work together to write answers in their journals to the questions. The kids are already very familiar with the questions, so they are able to practice their newly acquired skill with their partners. And you have created a no-prep, high-thinking-level learning station.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14605163078560781675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-323464984063922298.post-26674936525621803962015-07-13T23:14:00.000-07:002015-12-28T12:23:30.331-08:00Movement in the Classroom<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

When a student answers a question correctly using a complete sentence with justification for the answer, he or she is allowed to sit on their desk if they so choose. Your class will be super engaged. They will love it when they can travel to revising and editing stations around the room.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> U</span>se file folders that have been stapled together. Stand them up to create a work station. Tape reminders in each station as to revising or editing techniques that students have learned. The reminders I use are Sentences, Vivid Verbs, Similes, Metaphors, Dialogue, Transitions, Spelling, Thoughts, and Feelings.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Students take their drafts as they stop at each station. They review their drafts to see what revisions or edits they need, then travel to the next station. I’ve made these signs available for free download at Rosie’s Resources on TpT. As you plan to go back to school, one important item on your
checklist might be to improve the quality of your questioning techniques during
lessons. Questioning techniques have been researched heavily. In fact, Marzano
says that questioning is one of the nine techniques that can increase student
achievement. (Classroom Instruction That Works, Marzano et al. 2001)<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Let’s face it. We’re busy teachers. Do we really have the
time to plan our questioning techniques each and every week for every lesson?
You can make your planning life simpler by planning your questions once a year.
Yes, that’s right, once a year. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Try this: Make a list of questions according to genre. Then,
when you teach fiction, use your fiction questions. If you’re teaching
biographies, go to your biography questions. You will always be prepared; you
will always have rich classroom discussions; kids will be more engaged; and
your questions will help kids understand the objectives better. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Keep your questions on a list that you keep in your classroom at all times. I color code my list of questions according to
genre. I keep a copy in all the instructional areas in my classroom: at the
front of the room where we gather on the carpet, at my guided reading table, and
on the cart where I keep my Elmo. That way, the questions are always handy. For
those districts that require that questions be typed in the lesson plans, just
pull out your list of questions by genre and copy a few meaningful questions
from your list. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I have lists of the questions I have collected over the
years in my store. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comprehension-Questions-for-Fiction-60-Critical-Thinking-Cards-834682" target="_blank">Fiction are here.</a> <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comprehension-Questions-for-Informational-Text-80-Critical-Thinking-Cards-1953532" target="_blank">Informational are here.</a><o:p></o:p></div>

Everything went better than expected, and he was able to come home from the hospital four days early. I attribute it to all the prayers and well wishes of friends and family. All praise, glory and honor to God, who guided the surgeon's hands and good judgment. Eight weeks of no driving and physical therapy, and he'll be good as new. Now, I get to return to my work, about which I'm passionate, which is creating resources for my students and others.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14605163078560781675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-323464984063922298.post-6795706245294674722015-06-28T20:08:00.001-07:002015-06-28T20:15:07.828-07:00Stop and Smell the RosesAs teachers, we're always balancing our professional lives with our family life. Throw in TpT, and the three sometimes collide. Tonight, I feel like I'm in a colossal collision. My sweet hubby will have open heart surgery tomorrow--his second in three years. Sometimes school and TpT have to wait. Tomorrow, my husband--who supports me every day in everything I do and has loved me practically my whole life--needs me. And I'll be there for him. Please give your loved ones an extra hug and, perhaps, offer up a little prayer for a successful surgery for Chris and a restful recovery.<br />
